Guest Post // Instagram Yoga

Hey all! Today I have a fabulous guest post to share with you all about two of my favourite things... instagram and yoga. This post comes to you from the lovely Fab from The Passion Junkie and Diary of a Witty Chick

I don’t know you, but I could scroll Instagram for hours. I am massively into food, so I go from constant drooling when in cooking-mode, to unmeasurable pain when on a cleanse. Still, when I need inspiration, that’s where I am heading - especially around breakfast time. Whether you are a foodie or a yoga bunny, if you are part of the #fitfam or just a bit nosy, Instagram can hook you in an endless scroll.

When yogis landed into Instagram (IG), the flawless slim yoga gals posing in Ibiza were the archetype of the ‘strike a pose’ movement. This lead to provocative articles about the ‘image of yoga online’ (like this one: ‘We stopped the Yoga selfies’) and encouraged people question the whole model that was circulating online. As we all know, yoga is for every body, every size, every human being (have you seen a pug pulling an upward facing dog? If not, it’s time to pay a visit to our ol’ friend Google).

Things have changed though. Take Laura Sykora, for example. Wife, mother, yoga teacher and handstand addict, Laura has just recently reached one million followers. She is currently running a challenge with Kino McGregor and Beach Yoga Girl on #BalanceBasics. Save the hashtag and head to IG to see the schedule to be followed throughout the month. Each day hundreds of yogis open their heart in bridges, or wobble in front of the camera. From their hall. Backyard. Bedroom. Living room (that’s my favourite yoga spot).

Yoga can be done everywhere, and IG is reminding us of that. The hashtag #stopdropyoga is a great example. MacKenzie Yoga had a whole month of #stopdropyoga moments. In Starbucks. At home (from more inspiration, #yogaeverywhere is another to be bookmarked).

The pretty pose is just the prompt, now IG tells stories, touches people’s heart. Let’s get back to Laura Sykora just for a second. Laura is famous for her pictures with her Mini. Hello, matching mum-daughter leggings. If the picture of the mini-bridge doesn’t melt your heart into a puddle, then you are probably not human. Kino MacGregor is an Ashtanga yoga teacher, Handstands lover, and possibly one of the bendiest yogis of Instagram. Aside from being an author and writer, she is also a world traveller, She’s been touring all over, and it’s amazing to see her back bending in Moscow, doing a cheeky headstand in front of the Danish Royal guards, and well, also just delivering amazing videos that make you feel like actually getting to touch your toes in forward bend is not such a big deal.

Whether you see it as a way to show off scorpions on a sandy beach, or as a medium to share your progress in your practise, being a yogi on IG is less about perfection, and more about inspiration. Big cheers to each yoga breakthrough. A high-five emoticon for every headstand. Another chance to take yourself less seriously on the mat - the Yoga police won’t come to your house for that, promise.

Take Instagram as a way to encourage yoga lovers to take on challenges, push themselves forward, and proves that you don’t have to be a size 8 on the seaside to do an impressive headstand. You can do it next to your kitchen sink, with your cat photobombing you.

  1. Brilliant post! I follow a few IG yogis and wish I had their flexibility and the beautiful surroundings and beaches they tend to take their pictures on! xx
