Diary of a Yoga Teacher ~ Teaching... So Let's Begin!

Happy Saturday everyone. I hope you are all having a fab weekend. I have just started to teach my first yoga classes at some local gyms and it gave me an idea for a series of blog posts. I want to share my journey with you, it's exciting and scary at the same time as I am going through this big period of change in my life. I will be sharing with you all my journey from office girl to yoga teacher.

As you know I recently completed my training with TriYoga London's Mercedes Ngoh. The training was everything I could have hoped for but nothing is as nerve racking as stepping up to the front of that room to teach your very first class... that was me, last night. As Mercedes told us, there is no better experience then just jumping right in and starting to teach. Fresh out of training I was determined to start teaching as soon as possible to put what I had learnt into practice. So there I was on my mat with a class full of 20 people looking at me expectantly. The class I was covering was one I attend as a student on a regular basis which meant that I knew almost everyone in there. I'm not sure whether this was a good or a bad thing... On the plus side I knew the style of class they liked to practice but on the negative side I was thinking 'what will they think of me if I muck up?' Being someone who historically has never been very confident speaking in front of a group of people teaching a class is very much out of my comfort zone, but that's what I want to do so I faced my fear head on. I taught a strong flow class that evening and I got lots of positive feedback at the end ~ I felt on top of the world and instantly fell in love with sharing my passion for yoga with people. There is nothing to fear.

I have learnt never to listen to the voices ~ which is something Mercedes told us and she is so so right. I was worried throughout the class last night and again in my class this morning that people would hate it. I was worried that people might walk out. That it was too strong or not strong enough. It's hard to judge what students are experiencing in a yoga class, you cannot see into their heads so don't listen to the voices in yours.

I'm finding my feet, finding my voice and going with the flow!

  1. I am a newer yoga instructor as well. I've been teaching Pilates for years and just started teaching yoga a few months ago. I am now obsessed with teaching it. It's so great! I am looking forward to reading about all your future endeavors as a yoga instructor!
