My Tips for Staying Healthy During the Holidays

Holidays are coming! With that comes over indulging, late nights and drinking a little too much. I always get anxious about the extra calories lurking around the corner. While this isn't generally the time of year for detoxing and getting fit, you can certainly still enjoy yourself without the guilt and need to start a detox and diet come January. These are my tips for staying healthy during the holidays and avoiding gaining those extra pounds!

  • Everything in moderation. I am a big believer in this - if you want a cookie have one, just don't eat the whole packet! It is all about being mindful, if you are full up there is no need for second helpings.
  • Keep moving. Everyone is very busy at this time of the year, flitting from Christmas parties to Christmas shopping, visiting family and friends. So quite often the workouts get neglected  No matter how busy you get try to fit in a workout a few times a week. Do a YouTube video workout or go for a long walk with the family after a big meal. Working out will keep your metabolism going and able to handle those extra calories - sweat it out!
  • Drink plenty of water. During the winter months we tend to slack on drinking enough water. Water intake is one of the most important for keeping your mind and body healthy. Carry a water bottle with you and make sure to drink up throughout the day!
  • Avoid the sugary drinks. Drinks such as Baileys and cocktails can be laden with sugar. Have a couple of glasses of wine instead - just don't drink the whole bottle! In between drinks, have a glass of water. Your body will thank you in the morning.
  • Don't go hungry. Being hungry leads to terrible things such as eating a whole bar of Dairy Milk (family sized) in one sitting. I speak from experience here! Make sure that you eat as normal, even if you know you will be eating a larger meal in the evening. Don't starve yourself as this will slow your metabolism down, eat as normal. This way you won't over indulge later in the day.
  • Tomorrow is a new day. If (or when) you over indulge don't beat yourself up about it. Remember tomorrow is a new day, hit the restart button and get back on track! So often people will fall into the trap of thinking that since they over indulged one day they might as well carry on in that pattern. Not true! One day or even two won't do you any harm. Start your new day with a cup of hot water and lemon - it helps to reset your system, aid digestion and it is a natural energiser.
Do you have any helpful tips for staying healthy during the holidays?
