A few months ago I entered a Facebook competition with Cityscape Bliss and won the Maze Runner trilogy by James Dashner. I was so pleased as I love to read and I had heard great things about this trilogy. As the cover says if you are a fan of The Hunger Games and dystopian themes you will love this book.
The story is told from the point of view of Thomas. He emerges from a elevator into a world which seems unreal. As the reader you feel as disorientated as Thomas does as there are a lot of strange terms which are used ~ 'Shank', 'Klunk', 'Maze', 'Greenie'. It took me a couple of chapters to get into the book, mostly because of this dialect however, like Thomas, it doesn't take long until you pick up the lingo. Thomas is dazed, confused and unable to remember anything from his past. He remembers snapshots but no names, faces or people from his past. He isn't alone, he is surrounded by other boys who were inserted into the Glade in the same way.
Surrounding the Glade is four huge walls and outside of these walls lies the Maze. Although none of the boys know how or why they got there everyday a group of runners go into the maze to try and find a way out. They have to get back to the Glade before darkness as at night the Greivers come out. These are half animal, half machine like creatures who can kill. They have spinning saws for arms and smell like grease, they really are made to sound quite terrifying! Thomas has an instinctive feeling that he was sent to the Glade to become a runner and so he must try to regain his lost memories and survive this strange place.
The Maze Runner is full of suspense, a little bit of sci-fi and is a real page turner! You continuously want to know what happens next. You can purchase The Maze Runner online for £4.49.
