If you have been busy browsing pinterest for gift ideas, you may have noticed the trend of gifts coming in jars. Pretty much anything can come in a jar nowadays! So I thought to myself - why not give it a go? You can make this to give to anyone over the holidays - friends and family! I decided to put my own spin on things and put some home made granola in my jar, along with the recipe. I think that this is a fun gift idea and also you get to pass along one of your favourite recipes.
Granola is one of those foods which is super yummy and perfect for breakfast. However, did you know that the shop bought kind can be brimming full of sugar and fat? That's why I make my own! That way you know exactly what has gone into it. I don't use sugar or honey in this recipe which is often used in boxed granola - read the label! This recipe is from Notes From My Kitchen Table which is a really great cookbook if you are into healthy eating.
Ingredients
- 200g whole rolled oats
- 75g whole unblanched almonds
- 4 tablespoons pumpkin seeds
- 4 tablespoons sunflower seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (I add a little more because I love cinnamon!)
- 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
- 125ml real Vermont maple syrup
- 3 tablespoons light agave nectar
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 75g dried cranberries roughly chopped
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees C (350 degrees F).
- Stir together the oats, almonds, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, spices and salt in a large bowl.
- Combine the maple syrup, agave and vegetable oil in a small jug and then mix into the dry ingredients.
- Spread the granola out on a non-stick baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until evenly browned.
- Remove from oven and let it cool.
- Combine the cooled granola with the cranberries.
- Store in an air-tight container.
Add a ribbon to your jar and attach the recipe and there you go - granola in a jar!
