Jayne Runs | A Beginners Guide to Running

source
While the weather is still reasonably good (by good I mean not winter) here in the UK why not make the most of it and exercise outdoors? You can't beat the fresh air, the wind in your hair and the mud on your trainers! If you have read my previous Jayne Runs post you will know all about my journey to becoming a runner so why don't you start yours?

Running is a great way to boost your metabolism and increase your energy levels. I always feel better for a run -- it must be all those endorphins buzzing around my body. These endorphins are what makes you feel happy. This is what people refer to as a 'runners high'. Random fact -- did you know that cross country skiing is the only activity which burns more calories than running? The great thing is that there is no fancy equipment needed for running -- all you need is a good pair of trainers.

Here are a few of my tips to get you started running:
  • Finding the time - Set your alarm half an hour early to fit in a run before work or school.
  • Take it steady - Always know your limits and run within your ability. Don't over do it.
  • Set yourself miniature goals - You need to get your lungs in shape before you can run any great distance. If you can run for 10 minutes then great! Next time out push yourself to do 15 minutes. Push yourself a little further each time out and before you know it you will be running for 30 minutes.
  • Take the run/ walk approach - A lot of people find that this is a good way to build up their stamina. Simply run for 10 minutes then walk for 5 and repeat. Build it up so that you take less walking breaks.
  • Stick with it - Be patient. Running does take time to build up but once you have the basic fitness in place it is worth it!
  • Find a friend - Running with a friend it a great way to keep motivated. You can encourage each other to keep going when it gets tough!
  • Use an app - if you are running alone use an app to keep you motivated. There are lots out there which are either free or cost very little. Personally I use and love my Nike+ app!
  • Hydration - Make sure that you rehydrate properly after a run. Running is hard work and really makes you sweat!
  • Warm up and cool down - Stretch! It is important to warm up those muscles correctly before you go for a run otherwise you might get an injury. Stretch out your leg and arm muscles. Cooling down correctly is also vital. Walk for a bit and stretch those muscles again!

Hopefully my tips will help you get out there and make the most of the rest of the summer while it is here! Let me know if you are beginning running or if you are a seasoned runner what are your running tips?

On a side note I have been doing the Tone It Up 'Beach Week' this week -- you might have seen my updates on Twitter -- and I am loving it! Early morning workouts really do keep you energised throughout the day. Let me know if you would like to see a post about what I did and how I got on. It includes eating cleaner and healthier too!

  3. I like this post, its very clear and straight to the point. I love going to the gym and occasionally run in the park with my boyfriend. I realised its so much harder when you run on real ground than on a treadmill. I agree with about feeling happier after a good run. On the days I don't do any cardio, I feel dopey and miserable and on the days I do I feel happy and active lol

  5. Great post, I'm useless at running but really want to 'get into it' because I hate the gym! The biggest issue - apart from my stamina! - is that my trainers always kill my feet.

    Any recommendations for trainers?

    2. I wear Asics Gel-1150's and love them to bits. I had the same problem as you did, my trainers were hurting my feet. The Asics (the Keyano's are grea too, bf has them) are worth the money and you can usually get them for a good price on wiggle.co.uk.

Sorry for hijacking the reply, just had to share.

    3. I don't mind! I have heard a few people say about how good the Asics trainers are especially if you need extra support for your feet. I have never used them myself but if you need support because your feet hurt I would pop down to your local running store & they can advise you what trainers to get for your foot shape etc :) x

I totally agree with your tip to stay hydrated. Sometimes that is underestimated but it REALLY is important :)
